The Gulf Stream near the Rhumb Line Rhode Island Sound to Bermuda - May 1, 2021 - An Analysis of Conditions Posted May 5, 2021

April 30, 2021: The Marion Bermuda Race Organizing Committee is working very hard to put together a safe race, though a somewhat different race for 2021. Recent changes in Bermuda have caused some concerns that we would like to share.

Bermuda has entered a three phased protocol beginning with a complete lockdown until May 9th. Phases two and three are scheduled to end on June 24, 2021. This timing may vary based on a reduction or increase in COVID cases on the island. We are watching this carefully.

The current testing requirements for Mariners on the Bermuda travel website have several contradictions. The current arrival testing timeframe by air was just reduced from five to three days before arrival in Bermuda. If the Mariner requirement follows suit, this requirement would obviously not be possible for a small craft to meet sailing from Massachusetts to Bermuda. Our people in Bermuda are having that conversation with the BDA Health.

On April 26th, the CDC changed the travel advisory to Bermuda from high risk to very high risk.  If this doesn’t change, it would be unreasonable for the organizing committee to sanction a race under that direction.

We expect to be able to come to a final determination within the next two weeks. We will post updates as information changes. Until then…take advantage of Zoominar invitation below to learn about the breakthrough scoring program being used by the race.
